This week - featuring ... Gay von Ess

Gay_von_Ess

When Gay von Ess completed her training and started as a preschool teacher in the late 1960s, she felt an instant attraction to the two special needs children in her care.

''I really felt they were more interesting than the mainstream children,'' she said.

She quickly moved into the area of special education and has been helping Canberra families with children with autism and Aspergers syndrome ever since.

Today she receives a Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division for service to people with autism spectrum disorders and their families, as an advocate and educator. read more ...

On a VERY cold winters morning these young men of CLP became very cold men as they cooked up a storm on behalf of CLP ... and they were still smiling at the end of the day. Many thanks Dan and "Garadoose"!!!

Jordan O'Reilly

Jordan O’Reilly (22) has devoted his entire life to changing the future for people with disabilities in Australia. When he was just 14 months old, Jordan’s brother Shane was born with a severe physical disability, and not a day has passed since then that Jordan has not been the most devoted, loving brother to his younger sibling.

Most in that situation struggle with the challenge of a disabled sibling, but Jordan embraced his little brother’s struggles as his own. As an adult, Jordan not only continued to support his brother, but went on to work with young people with intellectual disabilities.

Jordan now runs Fighting Chance Australia, a charity which works towards a better future for physically disabled young Australians. His current project involves designing innovative, forward-thinking employment models for people with profound physical disabilities who are none-the-less extremely bright. This project has the potential to transform the sector and provide employment to people currently considered “unemployable”.

He does this while also studying at university to become an Occupational Therapist, and plans to spend his career working with children with disabilities. Think he's a 'Stells Fella'? like him on facebook

McNamara_familyRhonda, Abe and Emerald McNamara recently did a photo shoot for CLP to assist us in developing promotional material. Our thanks to you, they are beautiful photos!!

To CLP from Rhonda ... I could cry, it so hits the spot and my kids are beautiful and i want the same for both of them, a happy, independent and productive life (with love, joy, support for the hard stuff that is ahead, for every one of us).  My thanks to Alison and Esther and a special thank you to Dana and Steve, can you please pass on and I hope I got Steves (or aka nice guy with camera man name right!)  who both made us feel special while having photos done, which is a tough gig really, smiling at a camera....honestly I am proud and thank you so much for providing us with an opportunity to advocate for independent living, a basic human right for every person (and their family/carers) living with disability or impairment, and an obligation on our government and community to ensure it happens.

After seeing the fab promotional material it feels great to be part of something bigger than just 'us'!

Rhonda
